Boasting vibrant pops of psychedelic colour and plenty of personality, ADGE Hotel + Residences officially throws open its doors today in the beating heart of Surry Hills.
Offering an inner-city staycation that blends design, music, art and fashion, the eclectic new hotel sits beside the former Cambridge Hotel which is currently undergoing a significant overhaul and will rebrand to ADGE Hotel + Residences once complete. Both buildings are connected by a communal lobby and together form part of a $65 million transformation of the site.
Designed for urban adventurers and experience seekers, the new hotel is ideally located on Riley Street in the cultural hub of Surry Hills, close to all the action on Oxford St and Crown St. Enjoy easy access to world class restaurants, boutique shops and galleries including dining institutions Nomad, Firedoor and Chin Chin and art studios such as Brett Whiteley Studio and Flinders Street Gallery.
Seeking inspiration from its local surroundings, ADGE Hotel + Residences features 93 creatively designed guest rooms with bold carpets, pod-style bathrooms, SMEG fridges and Nespresso machines. This is in addition to 12 existing two-bedroom apartments that offer open plan living and dining, fully equipped kitchens and large wraparound balconies.
Designed in collaboration between Tzannes Architects and Team 2 Architects, with interiors designed by SJB, ADGE Hotel + Residences is a unique space where fashion, music, art and culture collide to deliver an unforgettable guest experience.
According to Alec Tzannes, Director at Tzannes Architects, at the heart of the ADGE Hotel design brief was the need to reposition the Cambridge Hotel as an attractive, inner city hotel known for its design and location while designing a brand new hotel alongside it.
“It was important to blend new elements with the original design of the Cambridge Hotel so we decided to use a ‘one hotel/one place’ approach featuring different design eras that enrich the guest experience,” Alec said.
Seeking inspiration from 1950s and 60s Italian design and the Memphis design movement of the 1980’s, the interior design process was a colourful escape from the reality of lockdown restrictions for the team at SJB.
“We designed the interiors for ADGE during 2020, when COVID had set in and we were all stuck at home feeling miserable and physically restricted. Just like the Memphis design movement was a reaction against the status quo, following the 1950s/60s mid-century modern and 1970s minimalism design, which were all about structure and straight lines, designing ADGE was an escape from what was happening in real life,” said Andrew Parr, Director, SJB.
“The overall colour palette is inspired by Italian fashion houses of the 1950’s with custom bedheads and joinery inspired by Pierre Cardin design of the 1960’s. The result is a melting pot of colour and expressive design through the years which we hope inspires guests to feel a sense of fun and creativity,” Andrew said.
When it comes to dining, guests are spoilt for choice with the option of Korean fare from the acclaimed Soul Deli, as well as an intimate dining experience at Sydney’s smallest Japanese restaurant, Raida Noda’s Chef Kitchen, which is located in the lobby of ADGE Residences.
When the renovation of the former Cambridge Hotel is complete early next year, ADGE Hotel + Residences will boast a total of 242 guestrooms, and also house an Italian-style restaurant with a well-known chef already poised to take the reins.
ADGE Hotel + Residences is also proud to support the Oxford Street Pride Business Charter which celebrates the historic importance of Surry Hills to the LGBTQIA+ community and allies.
